Hiring a development agency — particularly one in a different country — is a leap of trust. You're paying for work you often can't fully evaluate until it's already built. These are the questions worth asking before you sign anything, based on what actually predicts whether a project goes well.
1. Can I see real, working examples — not just screenshots?
Screenshots can hide a lot. Ask for live links to sites they've actually built and shipped. A legitimate agency should have no problem sharing this.
2. Who will actually own my code?
Get this in writing before the project starts. You should own the full source code and have direct access to your hosting and database — not be locked into the agency as the only party who can ever touch your own site.
3. What happens after launch?
Websites need maintenance — security patches, bug fixes, small updates. Ask exactly what's included after go-live and what isn't, and get a straight answer on ongoing costs before you're surprised by them later.
4. How do you handle security?
This is the question most people forget to ask, and it's often the one that matters most. Ask specifically: are passwords properly hashed, is user input sanitized against injection attacks, is there rate limiting on login forms? A vague answer here is a warning sign — a real dev team should be able to answer specifically, not just say "yes, it's secure."
5. Will I be able to update content myself?
Unless you're happy paying a developer for every text change, you need a real answer on whether — and how — you can edit your own content once the site is live.
6. What's your communication process during the build?
Time zones matter more than people expect when hiring internationally. Ask how and how often you'll get updates, and what tools they use to keep you in the loop.
7. What's not included in the quote?
This is where budgets quietly blow up. Hosting, domain costs, third-party API fees, ongoing maintenance — get clarity on what's genuinely covered by the quoted price versus what comes later as an extra.
None of these questions are unreasonable to ask, and a good agency will answer all of them directly. If you get vague or defensive answers to more than one or two, treat that as useful information in itself.
